“Oscar Wilde’s Death in the Afternoon” is based on the story by Oscar Wilde. The narrator, Jack LeRoux is a secret admirer of Oscar Wilde. His admiration for the writer has come to the point where he had to try and find ways on how to get hold of “the most beautiful woman in the world” so that he can seduce her and be accepted into his own home. The more he tried, the more he found out that the woman was not in fact alone, but in fact in the company of another man. But this did not deter the narrator from continuing with his pursuit of the woman.
Even though the narrator’s initial approach was unsuccessful, he did manage to get his hands on the woman, just as Wilde had predicted. But as the narrator continued to chase after the woman, a series of accidents took place. One of these incidents, caused by the narrator himself, resulted in the death of Oscar Wilde, the great playwright. When the narrator finally found out that he had killed his idol, the devastating consequences that were inflicted on him for the rest of his life made it impossible for him to carry on with his pursuit of the woman.
The incident left an irreparable wound on the narrator, and he slowly became an utter recluse, living his life the way he used to when he was still an admirer of Oscar Wilde. All of his endeavors to find the woman ended up being futile and had little effect on the situation. Eventually, he felt the need to learn how to cope with the tragedy that was inflicted on him. But what if there were another way of coping with this? What if the narrator was able to learn how to cope with the tragic events of Oscar Wilde’s life? Would he find the way to move on after his own heartbreak?
