Some people think that if they had anything to do with the literary career of Oscar Wilde, it would be the best thing that could have happened to him. I do not know how right they are, but if they are on their death bed and wish for a change in their life, they should read a biography of Oscar Wilde by Mike Davenport. This book was written about ten years ago and has come back again to be considered a classic, even with all the rise and fall of world empires there is still an appreciation of Wilde’s character and achievement. Davenport also has a history of his own and I liked that he did this.
The early part of the book recounts some of the various letters from Wilde to his beloved devoted one, Bessie Braddock, and what some call the “Big Bang” of Wilde’s literary career. This was his first novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, which was published in 1890. It was followed a few years later by The Picture of Alfred Dolly, which may well have been one of the finest novels ever written. It also has been said that the book was one of the most influential works of the Victorian era. The two novels combined became The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Picture of Alfred Dolly.
The later chapters of Davenport’s account of Wilde include the publication of his famous play, Vanity Fair, and several adventures, one of which was one he called the “harvest”. These were two visits to America and England. A few chapters after this book was published in England, Wilde was arrested and charged with sodomy and sent to an asylum where he spent the rest of his life. Of course, many people say that having this famous person on trial changed him.
